New Cranbrook mayor and council sworn in

The City of Cranbrook officially has a new mayor and council following a swearing in ceremony on Tuesday, Oct. 27.

“It’s obviously a big moment for myself and the councillors,” said Mayor Tom Shypitka.

“We’re very proud of ourselves and very honoured that we got the vote of confidence from the community.”

Shypitka is joined by a very new council made up of Robin Goldsbury, Joe McGowan, Ron Miles, Bruce Murdoch, Shaun Penner and Wayne Price.

Price is the only councillor from the previous term.

Shypitka said they will be relying on Price to get them up to speed.

“We have a new cast here except for Wayne Price, so he’ll be a bed rock of our council providing that background and information we’re not privy to, that he’s been privy to for the last four years.”

Coucnil will start working on their priorities for the term and Shypitka said the public was clear on what’s important to them.

“We’re going to have to have that large discussion on priorities, where everybody is at and where they want to see themselves after four years. We’re going to have to go through some reviews to find out where we are as a corporation,” he said.

“The community spoke fairly loudly on crime, safety, taxation, downtown revitalization and city pride. Those were some of the more major topics and those are the things were are going to jump into right away and address how we get there the quickest and efficiently.”

Council is in orientation this week learning the ropes.

The inaugural council meeting is scheduled for Nov. 2.
