Updated bylaw gives simpler expectations on noise in Fernie

The City of Fernie has updated the Community Standards Bylaw to clarify noise standards for residents.

The bylaw updates set quiet hours from 11:00 pm to 7:00 am daily.  Construction noise is also prohibited between 8:00 pm and 7:00 am daily. Previously quiet hours were from midnight to 6:30 am.

Other updates to the bylaw also prohibit disruptive noises at any time, including the following:

▪️Vehicles without functioning mufflers or with altered mufflers that increase noise.

▪️Excessive horn use, squealing tires, unattended vehicle alarms, air horns, and engine brakes.

▪️Electronic or mechanical devices used to scare or deter wildlife.

Violations of the Community Standards Bylaw can result in fines ranging from $100 to $250 depending on the offence and can increase to $500 for subsequent offences.

There are certain essential activities that are exempt from the bylaw. Permitted activities include emergency response, avalanche control, snow removal, garbage collection, emergency repairs, and approved special events.
