Grade 11 student Brooklyn Haine will help keep the Cranbrook community up to date on the Mount Baker Wild senior girls basketball team as 107.5 2day FM continues its coverage this season.
The station has announced it will once again follow the Wild throughout the basketball season, with Haine taking on the role of team reporter.
Coverage is sponsored by Inland Truck & Equipment in Cranbrook.
Haine, who played on the junior team last year, is looking forward to making the jump to senior basketball.
“I’m super excited to play. We’ve got a bunch of tournaments we’re looking forward to, and yeah, it’ll be a great season,” she said.
Basketball is a family affair for Haine, who was introduced to the sport by her older sister, a former Wild player now in her second year of university basketball.
“She introduced me to it, and I kind of fell in love with it,” Haine said.
Following in her sister’s footsteps makes representing Mount Baker particularly meaningful.
“For me, it’s definitely something to do with my sister, that it’s kind of a legacy from her, and it’s also a way to just keep me in shape and athletic.”
This year’s Wild roster features a mix of experienced and younger players, with four Grade 12 students and six Grade 11 students. Haine said the team hopes to welcome a few additional players to practise with the squad.
Away from the court, the Wild are preparing for one of their annual fundraising traditions.
Players will spend this weekend preparing their popular nuts and bolts snack mix, with sales expected to begin the following weekend.
“We make them every year for I don’t even know how long we’ve been doing it,” Haine said.
“But yeah, we’ll make them all weekend and then start selling them the weekend after.”
The fundraiser comes ahead of the holiday season, with the snack mix also promoted as a Christmas gift option.
Haine said she enjoys the competitive side of basketball and hasn’t ruled out continuing with the sport after graduation.
“It’s definitely something that I’ve been considering. I’m not totally sure yet, but it’s definitely a possibility.”
As the Wild prepare for another season, Haine also acknowledged the support the team receives from local sponsors, volunteers and the wider Cranbrook community.
“We’re so grateful for them and it’s such a big support for our team.”
Fans can follow the Mount Baker Wild senior girls basketball team throughout the season on 107.5 2day FM, with updates from team reporter Brooklyn Haine and coverage sponsored by Inland Truck & Equipment in Cranbrook.
