Kimberley residents will no longer pay a curbside recycling fee after city council approved a new recycling contract.
The new contract, awarded to a different service provider, will cost the city less than the previous agreement.
Combined with funding from Recycle BC, the lower-cost contract will allow the city to fully offset the cost of providing curbside recycling service.
The contract takes effect at the end of August. A residential recycling fee of $0 will take effect Aug. 31.
Although the contract does not begin for two months, council said savings from the new agreement will cover earlier costs, allowing the fee to drop from $1.20 to $0 effective July 1, 2026.
Council also said it intends to maintain the $0 recycling fee through 2027 and 2028. It directed that any surplus generated under the new contract be transferred to the Solid Waste Reserve for future use.
A future report will outline options for using any surplus.
Council voted unanimously in favour of approving the new contract.
