Elk Valley RCMP urge hunting safety after bullet strikes Fernie home

Elk Valley RCMP are reminding hunters to follow firearm safety guidelines after a family in Fernie discovered a bullet lodged between the panes of a bedroom window.

Police said the bullet appeared to be from a hunting firearm and was likely fired from a considerable distance before striking the home.

Investigators believe the bullet had lost enough velocity that it failed to penetrate the second pane of glass.

The incident has prompted a warning from RCMP about the importance of knowing where bullets may travel when discharging firearms.

Police are urging hunters to ensure they fire only in a safe direction, with a suitable backstop to prevent bullets from travelling beyond their intended target.

RCMP also reminded hunters to follow all applicable firearm safety guidelines throughout the hunting season.
