A Kimberley man is among two people charged in connection with an alleged hate-motivated assault that left a woman trapped inside a portable washroom in Calgary.
Calgary police said officers were called to the 9600 block of Macleod Trail S.W. on July 2 after receiving reports of a woman in medical distress.
Witnesses told police the woman had been using a portable washroom when two men approached and tipped it over, leaving the door against the pavement and trapping her inside.
Police said the men fled before witnesses helped the woman out of the washroom, called police and provided first aid.
The woman was taken to hospital following exposure to waste matter and toxic chemicals and has since recovered, according to police.
The Calgary Police Service Hate Crime Prevention Team investigated the incident, including reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses and the woman.
Investigators allege the men made comments targeting the woman based on her gender and ethnicity and believe hate was a motivating factor in the assault.
Police said two 24-year-old men, one from Kimberley and the other from Calgary, were arrested and each charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm.
The Kimberley man is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 9, while the Calgary man is due in court Nov. 3.
