The city of Kimberley is partnering with the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) on a joint grant application to strengthen emergency support services (ESS) across the East Kootenay.
Council approved the decision at Monday’s meeting and said the RDEK would lead the application and manage the money if funding is approved.
The proposed funding totals $120,000, which includes $65,000 for volunteer training, $25,000 for volunteer recruitment and recognition, and $30,000 for emergency equipment.
Equipment would include more reliable internet connections at evacuation reception centres and temporary lodging sites, plus portable generators to keep services running during emergencies.
The grant would help improve Emergency Support Services that help people affected by fires, evacuations and other disasters with short-term food, shelter, clothing and emotional support.
There are roughly 55 volunteers who currently serve the region.
Training and recruitment would help the team prepare for emergencies and support more people when needed.
The funding is not yet secured and the plans depend on the grant application being approved.
