Military Ames Society request to name road as a tribute to veterans

A local veterans organization is asking Kimberley council to name an unnamed road in Veteran Memorial Park Veterans Way.

In a letter to council, the Military Ames Society proposed naming the road that runs between the cenotaph and the Overtime Beer building.

The society said the proposed name would strengthen recognition and respect within Veteran Memorial Park. It also suggested adding a message beneath the sign that reads: “The honour you give to them will be the honour you may someday receive.”

The society said it is prepared to complete the work required by city staff and believes the road name would serve as a lasting tribute to veterans, active service members and their families.

Similar road designations exist across Canada and internationally, and the society said the proposal would provide a meaningful way for the community to recognize those who served.

Kimberley council has received the letter and referred it to city staff for a report and consideration at a future council meeting.

The Military Ames Society supports military veterans and has expanded its support to include both retired and currently serving RCMP members. The group advocates for them and provides help with matters such as Veterans Affairs applications, medical claims, health conditions and peer support.
