Tie vote denies third reading for Sparwood DCC bylaw

Sparwood council was split on implementing amendments to the community’s development cost charge bylaw.

Council had directed staff to develop a DCC bylaw to help fund infrastructure to support community growth.

More on the bylaw can be found here.

Councillor Jason Christensen voted against it over concerns it could stifle growth.

“Growth is always better, you should encourage growth, that added $10,000 onto the cost I don’t think is going to encourage growth,” he said.

Councillor Steve Kallies was for the bylaw, saying it would help take some of the cost off of the general taxpayer.

“One hundred per cent of any new growth infrastructure is bore by the current tax payer,” he said.

“This introduces another option for funding those expansions.”

Acting mayor Amy Cardozo, and councillors Kallies and Saw Atwal voted in favour, while councillors Christensen, John Baher and Chris Nand voted against.

A tie vote defeats the motion.
