RDEK names new chair and vice-chair

The Regional District of East Kootenay board has elected Susan Clovechok as board chair and Roberta Schnider to the vice-chair position.

Clovechok said she’ll have big shoes to fill following the retirement of longtime chair Rob Gay.

“I take the responsibility really seriously and the standard has been set so high by Chair Gay,” Clovechok said.

“I feel really fortunate that we have an amazing team around the table. The board has been doing orientation, getting to know them a lot better and there is a depth and breadth of experience and knowledge that I think will continue to provide that level of support. I’m fortunate that I have Chair Gay’s cell phone number on hand.”

Schnider said she’s excited to help support Clovechok during this term.

“We’ve got a great team around us, including staff and I think the opportunity to be mentoring under Susan will be really exciting,” Schnider said.

There was a lot of turnover this election with the board losing 11 prior directors.

Clovechok said the new board is getting up to speed quickly.

“The last term we had six people turn over, a little bit easier. This is 11, so a significant amount of turnover, but the commitment that we’ve seen from everyone, and the curiosity, the interest and the camaraderie that’s already starting to build is really important,” she added.

Both Clovechok and Schnider have previously served as vice-chair.
