Drones flying over Kimberley updating mapping data

Drone mapping throughout Kimberley is getting underway today and will continue over the next couple weeks.

Booker Technical Services is carrying out the drone work that is scheduled to begin October 30 through November 14, depending on the weather.

Residents may see a large drone flying about 75 metres above the ground in different parts of the city updating aerial photography and mapping data.

The photos and mapping information will help the city plan projects and manage roads, utilities and other infrastructure.

City officials want residents to know the drone is gathering images for maps, not monitoring individual people or properties.

Officials said the scheduled drone flights are authorized by the city and will follow airspace and privacy rules.

Officials add the drones are operated by experienced professionals but ask the public to give the pilot space to work.

The city concludes that there’s no need to report these scheduled flights to the police.

Residents should avoid takeoff and landing areas, and let the flights proceed without interference.
