Work underway as lane pool at Western Financial Place still closed

Cranbrook’s lane pool at Western Financial Place remains closed, with staff aiming to reopen it Wednesday, Nov. 4.

A mechanical issue resulted in the pool closing Wednesday, but the broken pool heat exchanger has been replaced, and the pool will now be drained, refilled and heated.

The City of Cranbrook and Interior Health are advising the public that about 75 litres of ethylene glycol may have leaked into the lane pool. The city and Interior Health are investigating how much entered the water and how long the leak lasted.

Officials say swimmers may have been exposed to small amounts of Ethylene glycol, but serious health effects are very unlikely based on the estimated amount in the pool.

Accidentally swallowing small amounts of water with Ethylene glycol is not expected to cause health problems for youth or adults.

Anyone who swam October 26, 27 or 28 and has no symptoms or health concerns does not need to take any action.

Possible symptoms include nausea, vomiting or stomach discomfort.

Anyone with concerning symptoms, or who is worried that an infant or small child swallowed lane pool water, should call the BC Drug and Poison Information Centre’s 24-hour Poison Information Line at 1-800-567-8911 or 604-682-5050.

The wave pool, hot tub and steam room at Western Financial Place remain open.
