Elk Valley RCMP conduct check stop for vehicles and boats

Elk Valley RCMP conducted a large-scale check stop near Lake Koocanusa at the end of July.

Frontline officers from Elk Valley RCMP, B.C. Highway Patrol and the B.C. Conservation Officer Service stopped more than 400 vehicles over 2 1/2 hours to check drivers’ licences, proof of insurance and driver sobriety.

The July 31 check stop in Baynes Lake resulted in more than 125 breath sample demands and two 24-hour driving prohibitions for impaired driving, according to RCMP.

Officers also issued several violation tickets, including for having no insurance and failing to produce proof of insurance. More than 20 drivers who could not produce their driver’s licences received warnings.

A B.C. Conservation Officer Service officer also issued a ticket to a driver who failed to stop at a mandatory boat inspection.

A week after the check stop, Elk Valley RCMP conducted boat patrols on Lake Koocanusa, checking for compliance with safety and liquor regulations. Officers checked 14 boats during the five-hour patrol and issued several written warnings.

Elk Valley RCMP thanked its partner agencies for helping keep communities safe.
