Cranbrook council reaffirmed an earlier decision to move ahead with public consultation on potential locations for a proposed 10-bed hospice in the city.
The Cranbrook Kimberley Hospice Society (CKHS) has asked the city to donate the Mount Baker RV Campground property for a new hospice, a proposal that has drawn some unfavourable feedback.

The request does not include Baker Park, which the city has said is legally protected parkland.

Council met Monday morning for a special meeting to discuss the feedback and reaffirm its next steps.
Public consultation through two surveys is expected to begin in the coming weeks. Residents will be asked for their views on proposed locations through the 2027 Budget Citizen Survey, scheduled to run from Sept. 8 to Oct. 2, 2026.
The survey will ask whether residents support using the Mount Baker RV Campground site and will ask them to choose among five possible locations for the hospice.
The other locations under consideration are the Frost lands near St. Mary’s School, the Highlands area, the Slaterville area on 5th Street NW and land south of Kinsmen Quad Ball Park off Willowbrook Drive.

Survey results are expected to go to council Nov. 23 and will help the incoming council make a final decision on the hospice location.
Even if council supports donating the land, further public consultation would be required, including public hearings related to rezoning.
The surveys will also include questions on other issues to provide the incoming council with current information.
