Cranbrook adopts council conduct bylaw

Cranbrook city council has adopted a new bylaw that guides the behavior and procedures for council members to follow.

The bylaw establishes a standard for all local elected officials and provides a clear process for complaints.

The bylaw defines definitions for conduct, guidelines for standards and values, interactions with the public, at meetings, social media use and conflicts of interest.

It also outlines how and who can make a complaint and how an investigation gets launched.

The province has brought forward Bill 17, which covers the same issues, but city staff said they may not be passed in time for this year’s municipal election.

Once the provincial bill gets passed it will supersede any bylaws.
