Fernie ups budget for wastewater compliance

Fernie council has approved an increase of $341,590 for the wastewater compliance design project.

The project is related to the city’s aging water infrastructure and increasing issues of stormwater getting into the wastewater system.

The city does not currently meet regulatory compliance under the Ministry of Environment and has spent almost $1 million over the past three years to address that.

Of that budget increase, the city is allocating $152,730 to address inflow and infiltration.

Some of the recommended actions were originally not included in the 2026 budget, but rain events this winter have made them a priority.

More information on the city’s compliance efforts and upcoming projects can be found here.
