Thunderstorm warning throughout East Kootenay

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the East Kootenay service area, with storms expected to develop late this afternoon and continue into the evening.

Strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain could create hazardous conditions for residents and travellers across the region. Localized flooding, fallen branches and debris on roads may affect neighbourhoods, transportation routes and outdoor activities.

Damage to roofs, fences and temporary shelters is possible, while heavy rain may lead to pooling water and reduced visibility for drivers.

Mainroad crews will patrol the service area throughout the storm, clearing catch basins and removing debris to help keep roads safe and accessible.

Drivers are urged to slow down and adjust to changing conditions. Posted speed limits are intended for ideal weather conditions. Current road information and travel updates are available at DriveBC.ca.
