Slight uptick in calls for Cranbrook RCMP

Calls for service to the Cranbrook RCMP saw a small increase over the previous quarter.

There were 2,087 reports between January and March compared to 2,003 in the previous quarter.

There were a few significant case files that concluded this last quarter.

In the spring of 2023, the Cranbrook RCMP’s general investigation unit ran an undercover investigation into
local drug trafficking.

The investigation led to four charges and one suspect was sentenced to four years in jail on six offences and given a lifetime ban on owning firearms.

They also led a 2020 homicide investigation that ultimately resulted in a guilty plea to manslaughter.

A 2024 drug bust was also resolved with the accused getting a seven-year federal jail sentence.

“These investigations were complex and required significant time and resources, but they were essential to ensuring community safety. This outcome reflects our commitment to holding individuals accountable and ensuring the safety of our community,” said Sgt. Stu Hert, Operations Officer at the Cranbrook Detachment.

“We are continuing to focus on proactive policing initiatives, such as community patrols, to remain present, engaged, and responsive. By increasing patrols and early intervention, we’re working to enhance safety and address concerns before they become larger problems.”
