Fernie sees slight bump in calls to RCMP

The Elk Valley RCMP was a little busier in Fernie during the second quarter, with small increase in calls for service.

The detachment had 427 calls for service between July and September, up from 368 during the same time last year.

Staff Sergeant Svend Nielsen said the rise was nothing out of the ordinary.

“The file count for Fernie in the last quarter is up a little bit, but nothing too drastic. it basically reflects the busier summer.”

There were a couple reports of stolen vehicles but Nielsen said one was a misunderstanding.

“The theft of vehicle was unfounded,” he said. “They more or less forgot where they parked.”

However, bike thefts were up a little and Nielsen said it’s something they are aware of.

“Thefts of bikes are a bit more distressing,” he said. “A lot of these are mostly related to unsecure bikes that were taken, but some have been found.”

The full quarterly report can be found here.
