Fernie volleyball team wins gold in Alberta tournament

The Fernie Volleyball Club U15 girls team has come away with the gold medal at the Premier 3 Division 1 tournament in Red Deer over the weekend.

That division consisted of 120 teams, and according to Coach Keenan Morrison it’s the highest an East Kootenay volleyball team has ever finished in a tournament this size.

“It was a huge accomplishment just for the fact that we’re pulling from a population of 5,000 in Fernie and going up against teams from Edmonton that can pull from 1.3 million and Calgary 1.6 million.”

They were able to place first despite the roster being a little depleted.

“We are playing with a roster of ten people, two of which are currently injured,” Morrison added.

“We achieved that goal with eight players.”

The team will now be getting ready for the provincial tournament.

“We’re heading to Edmonton to the Expo Centre and we’re going to take part in the provincials,” he said.

“We’re going into that provincial seeded at number one which is pretty amazing.”

Provincials run from May 4-5.
