Cranbrook graffiti bylaw violations can now result in a $150 fine

The City of Cranbrook can now issue $150 tickets for violations of its graffiti rules.

Council adopted an amendment to the city’s Municipal Ticketing Information System Bylaw on Monday, allowing bylaw officers to issue a $150 fine when graffiti is placed or allowed to remain on property where it is visible from a highway or public place.

The rule applies to graffiti on fences, trees, signs and structures.

Council adopted the graffiti provisions as part of an amendment to its Unsightly Premises Bylaw on July 27. The latest amendment adds the $150 penalty to the city’s ticketing system, allowing those provisions to be enforced through municipal tickets.

Other violations under the Unsightly Premises Bylaw that carry a $150 fine include allowing garbage, rubbish or discarded materials to accumulate outside, allowing vegetation to become unkempt or exceed 30 centimetres in height and allowing noxious weeds to grow or accumulate.

A $150 fine can also be issued for an accumulation of derelict-looking vehicles or a trailer stored on a property where it is visible from an adjacent property.

The Municipal Ticketing Information System Amendment Bylaw was considered for adoption at Cranbrook council’s Oct. 5 regular meeting.
