Cranbrook firefighters sharpen school bus rescue skills

Cranbrook firefighters have completed two days of specialized auto extrication training focused on emergencies involving school buses.

Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services members took part in scenario-based exercises this week led by Randy Schmitz of JRS Safety Services Ltd.

The training focused on the construction of school buses and the challenges firefighters can face when trying to reach and remove occupants after a serious crash.

School District No. 5 and School District No. 6 each donated a retired school bus for the exercises, giving crews an opportunity to practise rescue techniques in realistic conditions.

The city also credited its public works department, Van Horne Towing and Farbrook Auto Wrecking for supporting the training.

Van Horne Towing helped set up the scenarios using tow trucks, while Farbrook Auto Wrecking supplied two minivans for the exercises.
