The Reuse Centre at the Cranbrook Transfer Station is set to reopen.
The Regional District of East Kootenay board approved the reopening at its Friday meeting.
RDEK board chair Rob Gay said the decision to reopen the facility came after it had been closed for about two years.
“The Reuse Centre was closed in early 2024 due to ongoing issues we were experiencing at the site including continuous break-ins and vandalism which caused costly damage to our fences, the buildings and property that potentially put staff and the public at risk,” said Gay. “Our Board recognizes how important that facility is to the wider community and we are hopeful that the previous challenges will not re-occur, so have approved the re-opening of the Reuse Centre.”
The board will review the impacts of reopening the Reuse Centre after its first six months of operation to determine whether the previous problems remain.
No official reopening date has been set. The RDEK said the centre will operate from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
The RDEK said it will advertise the reopening date once it has been determined.
The Cranbrook Transfer Station is one of six RDEK sites with reuse centres. It is in an industrial area at the north end of Cranbrook.
