Annual Cranbrook community-wide food drive coming up as food bank need increases

The Cranbrook Food Bank is trying to restock its shelves with the annual community-wide food drive on April 25.

In the week leading up to the drive, residents can expect paper bags to appear on their doorsteps.

“We have our annual food drive, which is the largest food drive in Cranbrook and it is coming at the perfect time. Our warehouse is looking bare and we really need to stalk those shelves. We are hoping that our community can come through for us once again,” said Cranbrook Food Bank executive director Julie Rose.

“A paper bag will be left on your door step and there will be a list of our top needed items and really we kind of need everything right now so it’s a pretty easy list to go by.”

Residents are asked to place donations in the bag if they are able and leave them out on the morning of the 25th.

If bag are missed, donations can also be dropped off at Safeway, Save on Foods and Superstore.

Rose said the need for the food bank keeps growing, with a lot of new clients coming in since their last donation drive in December.

“Demand continues to grow. Twenty-six per cent of our clients right now are new and I found that quite staggering. Everyday we register new clients, but until you run a report and see that number, it’s a large number,” she said.

“We’re seeing that more of our neighbours are needing help. Our community is wonderful and I know with this food drive we’ll be able to continue to serve our neighbours in need.”

Last year’s food drive brought in 18,000 pounds of food.
