Public comments wanted regarding Kootenay West Mine

The province’s Environmental Assessments Office is wanting to hear resident’s thoughts on a proposed change to the Kootenay West Mine project near Canal Flats.

The Kootenay West Mine recently finished construction and will be mining gypsum for mainly drywall production.

CertainTeed Canada Inc. received an environmental assessment certificate in January 2018, permitting to mine to produce an average of 400,000 tonnes of gypsum per year over 43 years.

The company is looking to amend the project and change how the material is sent out.

They are looking for approval to use an existing rail load-out facility in Canal Flats instead of the already approved location in Invermere.

It would shorten the highway route between the mine and facility by roughly 50 kilometres.

As part of any amendment request, the Environmental Assessments Office gathers any input from the public, municipalities or local First Nations.

Feedback can be submitted here until Dec. 22.
