The Village of Radium Hot Springs is in the early stages of re-doing its Official Community Plan.
An updated OCP was one of the big changes Mayor Mike Gray wanted to see when he was elected in 2022, with the current OCP being a decade old and the village’s population growing over 72 per cent between 2016 and 2021.
Mayor Gray believes it’s a good time to revamp the plan since the community has changed so much.
“The team is excited to hear what the community has to say because our population has really changed since the last time the OCP was done in Radium.” said Mayor Gray.
The process would have started sooner if not for some surprises.
“We have been talking about it for a while and had it on the books for late fall of last year to start the process,” said Mayor Gray.
“The provincial government introduced some changes to some of the zoning requirements and various other things. While those are important things to include we thought it was premature for us to continue on with the OCP process before we fully understood what those legislative changes were.”
The process is now underway and Mayor Gray is excited to see what the future holds for the community.
“We’re ready to get going this spring,” he added.
“We’re ready to update things and get that new guiding document that really sets us up for the next decade, several decades and beyond.”
While Mayor Gray has his ideas of what should be in the new OCP, he’ll remain tight-lipped.
“I’ve got lots of ideas and lots of things I think are going to happen, but I don’t think it’s a good idea to share what my ideas are right now,” he said.
“The most important thing is for us to make sure this document reflects what the community wants. Let’s let the community speaking. I will listen to what they have to say and hopefully, their ideas align with mine.”
An official date has not been set for when the community can provide their ideas for the OCP.
