New multi-purpose centre coming to ʔAkisq ̓nuk

Work will soon get underway on ʔAkisq ̓nuk’s new multi-purpose centre, complete with a new health centre, band hall and renovated administration building.

ʔAkisq ̓nuk officials said the building’s centrepiece will be a gathering place for the community, with a large open space for events and a commercial-grade kitchen.

“Once completed, the New Multi-Purpose Centre will provide a state-of-the-art and culturally relevant facility for ʔAkisq̓ nuknik to gather, hold ceremony, and receive services,” said officials.

The building will be adorned with natural features, with a floor inlaid design depicting the river tributaries that define ʔamakʔis Ktunaxa.

“This endeavour isn’t just about bricks and mortar; it’s about weaving dreams, preserving heritage, and shaping a brighter tomorrow. Encapsulated in the design is our past, present and future.” said Nasuʔkin Donald Sam.

“Our dedicated staff will find more than an office, they will be embraced by the aesthetic reflections of our community and find inspiration and purpose in their daily work life,”

“The updated services, with an emphasis on our Elders, are promising to enhance the quality of life for all ʔAkisq̓nuknik (People). Their well-being will be nurtured within these walls, a testament to the commitment of the ʔakisq̓nuk First Nation to its people.”

ʔAkisq ̓nuk officials expect construction to begin this summer, with completion slated for fall or winter of 2025.

Member and health services will be provided in ʔAkisq ̓nuk’s existing health centre and recreation centre offices.
