College and Public Library set to launch new lecture series

The College of the Rockies and the Cranbrook Public Library are set to launch a free series of lectures this week.

College officials said the series, known as Museia, was created by the faculty of University Arts and Sciences.

“A Museia is a festival in honour of the Greek muses who inspired sciences, mathematics, literature, and arts,” said College officials.

The first lecture is set for Dec. 21 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Cranbrook Public Library.

“Dr. Ben Tippett, Astronomy and Physics instructor in the College’s department of Math and Sciences, will explain the history of black holes, the paradoxes of their existence, the mysteries they contain inside of their cores, and the physical evidence we have that they really and truly exist,” said College officials.

“Black Holes are perhaps the most amazing things in the universe,” said Tippett. “They are made from the concepts of space and time and are sinkholes from which not even light can escape. Despite this, they are the source of the brightest light in the cosmos.”

More lectures are set for the spring and summer.

“March 21 will see Vance Mattson discussing The Death of God and Modern Life while Tippett will return on June 21 to talk about Lightning,” said college staff.

Lectures are free, but you are asked to pre-register if you want to go.
