Fernie readies self-fill sandbag station amid heavy rain

The City of Fernie has set up a self-fill sandbag station amid heavy rainfall in the Elk Valley.

City officials said they will provide bags and sand next to the City’s Operations Yard on Railway Avenue.

That said, you will need to bring your own shovel and gloves.

The Regional District of East Kootenay also has a self-fill sandbag station at the Elk River Inn along Highway 3 in Hosmer.

Environment Canada issued a heavy rainfall warning for the Elk Valley and the B.C. River Forecast Centre put up a high streamflow advisory for the entire East Kootenay.

A total of 75 to 100 millimetres of rain is expected to accumulate by Thursday as an atmospheric river sweeps across the region.
