Cranbrook mayor presented with poppy ahead of Rememberance Day

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #24 presented Cranbrook Mayor Wayne Price with a poppy on Monday.

The ceremony marks the official start of the Legion’s poppy campaign.

This comes after the local branch faced some challenges this year.

“It’s been a little bit difficult finding space for us to work out of, but we found space behind Dynamic Hearing and Ashley Home furnishing,” said Tammy Richert, Legion Branch #24 president.

You’ll start seeing volunteers with the Legion taking poppy donations around Cranbrook.

“Anybody who would like to volunteer, even if you have half an hour, come down and see us,” said Richert. “That means filling bags with poppies, folding flyers or whatever else. We always need volunteers.”

Richert said Legion Branch #24 ordered over 5,000 poppies, and over 1,000 bracelets and wreaths.

“It was a big order this year. Last year we tried to reuse as much as we could, but this year is our replenishing year,” said Richert.

Remembrance Day is Saturday, Nov. 11, with ceremonies beginning at 11 a.m. at the Cenotaph in Rotary Park.

“I’ve been to a number of events throughout British Columbia, and certainly Cranbrook’s attendance is right at the top,” said Mayor Price. “Per capita, Cranbrook is very well-represented.”
