Over 25 active fires burning in East Kootenay

Update: An evacuation order was issued for three properties in the Cross River area.

Original: There are over 25 active fires in our region, most are out of control and three are wildfires of note.

The St. Mary Wildfire is still the largest in the area and was last mapped at 4,093 hectares.

It was caused by downed power lines last Monday.

The second largest is the Horsethief Creek fire in the Columbia Valley.

It was sparked yesterday afternoon by lightning and has grown to 300 hectares.

The third wildfire of note is the Lladner Creek fire by Sparwood. It’s still approximately 150 hectares after it was sparked on Friday.

There is an out-of-control fire in the Moyie Range that was discovered on Saturday and has grown to 67 hectares.

A fire was discovered this morning near Fur Mountain by Canal Flats as well as a small blaze near Mia Creek.

The Yearling Creek fire east of Invermere has grown to over 1,000 hectares.

An evacuation order was issued for three properties in the Cross River area.

A few fires have popped up in Kootenay National Park and there are quite a few out-of-control fires burning in the Purcell and Columbia Mountain ranges.
