Crews making ground on St. Mary Wildfire, but cold front moving in

Cooler temperatures are coming into the region, which seems good for fighting fires, but it also brings unpredictable and erratic winds.

Crews are working 24/7 to put out the fire, with attention to spot fires the last couple of days.

“In the last 24 hours, nothing has changed which is great to report,” said incident commander Daniel Klein.

“We had no growth in the northwest, north and northeast. We had no spot fires challenge us overnight.”

The blaze is still around 4,100 hectares.

“We are going to get challenged today by some increased winds,” Klein added.

“We do have a cold front that is going to move into the region this evening. We are expecting sustained winds, 15 to 20 kilometres per hour and gusting 30 to 50 kilometres per hour through the evening and into tomorrow morning.”

Seven aircraft are assigned to this blaze, including two heavy-lift helicopters.

There is also 232 personnel actioning the fire along with 16 pieces of heavy equipment on site working on containment lines.
