Eleven wildfires active in East Kootenay

Eleven wildfires are burning in our area, four are out of control, two are being held and the rest are under control.

The largest is the Mount Kindersley blaze east of Radium Hot Springs in Kootenay National Park.

It’s now approximately 30 hectares and still out of control.

It was discovered on July 9 and is believed to be lightning-caused.

The next largest is a fire south of Bugaboo Provincial Park.

It was discovered on Friday, is around 13 hectares and is considered held.

Two out-of-control wildfires popped up this afternoon. Both are along the South Kootenay Reserve Road.

The cause for both fires is still under investigation and one is already 20 hectares.

Another out-of-control fire was also sparked this afternoon near Cherry Creek. It’s still small and the cause is being investigated.

A small fire is burning west of Wasa, but is now being held.

It was discovered yesterday, is lightning-caused and less than a hectare.

The remaining fires are all under one hectare and under control.
