Cranbrook urges residents to conserve water ahead of peak season

The City of Cranbrook is asking you to be mindful of your water use as we head into the summer heat.

City officials said July and August are typically when demand is highest on Cranbrook’s water supply.

Cranbrook’s water comes through the Phillips Reservoir, and according to city staff, the levels look good and flow is consistent for now but that could change.

“Public Works Staff are monitoring reservoir and creek levels regularly,” said Jason Perrault, Acting Deputy Director of Public Works. “If everyone considers limiting their water usage now, we will be in a better spot when we really need it.”

Currently, the city is at its normal Stage 1 watering restrictions, which limits what days you can water your lawn.

Under stage 1, even-numbered addresses can water their grass on Monday, Thursday and Saturday while odd-numbered addresses can use water on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.

You can turn the sprinklers on between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. or 8 p.m. to
11 p.m. on your watering day.

Water restrictions can be tightened, depending on conditions and levels at the Phillips Reservoir.

Cranbrook’s Outdoor Water Use & Regulation Bylaw has some guidance to avoid wasting water.

“You are asked to not use ponds, waterways, water features, fountains, hot tubs, or swimming pools which don’t have a water recirculation device,” said city officials. “Allowing water to flow freely from your property into a sanitary or storm sewer, creek, your street or neighbouring properties is also not allowed at any time.”

“You must have an automatic shutoff device on all your water hoses, and irrigation systems (either manual or in-ground systems) that spray water onto areas that can’t use water, such as driveways.”

Cranbrook has resources available to help you find ways to conserve water and determine your outdoor watering needs.
