The City of Cranbrook’s curbside recycling program has collected 975 tonnes of material in the two years since its inception.
City officials said there are 6,296 curbside recycling bins in use across Cranbrook.
Staff notes that 17 per cent of the community’s total solid waste has been diverted from the landfill, and will instead be reused.
“Without the support of our residents embracing our curbside recycling program over the past couple of years, it would not be the success it has become. This has helped keep such an impressive amount of reusable material out of our landfill,” said Mayor Wayne Price. “Thanks to our staff, the Regional District of East Kootenay and RecycleBC for their continued support of this important initiative.”
Curbside carts will not take materials such as glass, plastic bags, plastic overwrap, other flexible plastic packaging and foam packaging.
Those items must be taken to the RecycleBC Depot at Cranbrook’s transfer station.
