Special weather statement ended for East Kootenay, warning remains for Elk Valley

The special weather statements in effect for most of the Kootenays have ended, after rains have eased off across most of the region.

However, Environment Canada officials said the Elk Valley remains under a rainfall warning as of Tuesday afternoon.

The forecaster said an estimated 30 to 50 millimetres of rain has already fallen on the Elk Valley, and another 15 to 25 is expected before conditions change in the evening.

The Fernie area will likely bear the brunt of the rain.

City of Fernie officials activated the emergency operations centre in response to the prolonged rain.
