Kootenay drivers urged to plan ahead for busy long weekend

Kootenay drivers are being urged to plan ahead before hitting the highway for the final long weekend of summer.

Higher-than-average traffic volumes are expected across B.C., and travellers should check DriveBC for current highway conditions, closures and delays before leaving.

Wildfires also remain a concern, with 160 active fires burning across the province as of Thursday, Sept. 3, including 18 classified as out of control.

Drivers travelling through the Kootenays are encouraged to check the BC Wildfire Service map for fires that could affect their route and monitor local evacuation alerts and orders.

Conditions can change quickly, particularly on mountain highways, and motorists should allow extra time to reach their destination.

Before heading out, drivers should ensure their vehicle has enough fuel or charge and check the oil, washer fluid, lights and tires, including the spare.

Travellers should also pack food and water for passengers and pets, plan regular rest breaks and watch for motorcycles, cyclists and other road users.

Anyone heading into the backcountry should check local fire prohibitions and restrictions before lighting a campfire.

The province is also reminding travellers that wildfire smoke can affect areas far from an active fire.

Drivers can check the latest road conditions through DriveBC and wildfire conditions through the BC Wildfire Service website and app.
