Cranbrook RCMP reminding the public on electric vehicle rules

Cranbrook RCMP is reminding people to know the rules before riding small electric vehicles, including e-bikes, e-scooters and mopeds.

Different vehicles are governed by different laws under B.C.’s Motor Vehicle Act, including where they can be used, speed limits, age requirements and whether insurance or a licence is required.

E-bikes are allowed anywhere bicycles can ride, while e-scooters are permitted only in communities participating in B.C.’s electric kick scooter pilot project. Neither type of vehicle requires a driver’s licence or insurance. E-bikes must have fully operable pedals and have a speed limit of 32 km/h, while e-scooters are limited to 25 km/h.

Kimberley RCMP is reminding residents that e-scooters are not legal in Kimberley and cannot be used on roads, paths or sidewalks.

Mopeds and limited-speed motorcycles require a driver’s licence and insurance, are permitted only on public roads and have a speed limit of 70 km/h.

Electric dirt bikes and mini-motorcycles are not legal on public roads, sidewalks or bike lanes and cannot be insured or registered.

Cranbrook RCMP is also reminding riders to always wear a helmet and ride safely and legally.
