BC Highway Patrol seeks witnesses after fatal Kootenay National Park crash

BC Highway Patrol is seeking witnesses and dashcam footage after a 23-year-old Invermere man died in a single-vehicle crash in Kootenay National Park.

Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of a crash on Highway 93, just north of the Floe Lake trailhead, at about 11:10 p.m. on Oct. 2.

Police said a black Nissan Maxima left the highway, travelled down an embankment and came to rest on its side.

A 23-year-old Invermere man who was a passenger in the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the female driver was not seriously injured.

Sgt. Brett Reiben of BC Highway Patrol in Cranbrook said the cause of the crash has not been determined.

“Police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision and have not ruled out any factors that may have contributed to it,” said Sergeant Reiben.

Investigators are seeking information about the vehicle and its occupants between 9:30 p.m. and midnight on Highway 93 in Kootenay National Park.

Police are also looking for information about a man and woman associated with the black Nissan Maxima who may have been at restaurants, bars or another liquor establishment in Banff, Alta., around dinnertime on Oct. 2.

“Investigators believe there may be witnesses who stopped at the collision, or witnessed the events leading up to it, or the vehicle’s operation before the crash, but have not yet spoken to police,” said Sergeant Reiben.

Anyone who witnessed the crash, has video footage, saw the Nissan being driven or observed the driver’s behaviour in the hours before the crash is asked to call BC Highway Patrol in Cranbrook at 250-420-4244 and reference file (2100) 2026-2873.
