Radium hosting open house on new affordable housing project

The Village of Radium Hot Springs will hold an open house for community members to learn about the Ridge Road housing project.

The open house will take place at the Radium Hot Springs Centre on May 12 from 6 to 8 p.m.

At the open house, community members will be able to see early design ideas, speak to the project team, ask questions and share feedback.

The proposed housing development on Ridge Road will be built on 1.6 acres of village-owned land, with the goal of creating affordable, attainable rental housing.

The village has chosen a development with 48 rental units, including a mix of one, two and three bedroom units, with a primary focus on one bedroom. The units are intended for individuals, young adults, couples, and families.

Rent will be based on local income levels, with all units intended to be affordable for those earning at or below the Radium median income.

The residential development will include a shared amenity space, and possibly a public park and new road connection.

Key priorities identified by the public include walkability, parking, pet-friendly design and affordable rent.

Because the village is leading the project, it said it can ensure the development reflects local priorities and specific housing needs while delivering attainable rental housing.

The village is currently leading the project through the planning and engagement phase with support from 2B Developments Consultants & Associates. This phase is expected to continue for the next six months, with construction planned for 2027 pending approval and funding.

The village is pursuing funding from B.C. Housing and Build Canada Homes, along with other potential partners.

The $410,000 land purchase was funded through the federal Housing Accelerator Fund, the village’s parkland acquisition reserve fund and the provincial Growing Communities Fund.

In January, 2B Developments Consultants & Associates conducted in-person canvassing within the village. Results showed 85 per cent of respondents said a housing shortage is an issue, 77 per cent support the village taking action and 82 per cent believe additional housing would have a positive impact on the community.

More consultation will be coming soon, but the Village wants to hear input from the community. Residents can attend the open house, use the village website feedback portal or email village@radiumhotsprings.ca .
