Elk Valley Resources gifts $250K to build new BC Children’s Hospital

Elk Valley Resources is donating $250,000 to help build a new B.C. Children’s Hospital Centre for Health Complexity.

The centre will use an integrated model of care to support children with complex health conditions and their families across B.C. and Yukon.

“Children with complex health needs and the families who care for them, face extraordinary challenges. We’re proud to invest in the centre for health complexity and the dedicated teams behind it, who are reimagining care to better support these children and enhance their quality of life,” said Mike Carrucan, CEO of Elk Valley Resources.

The centre will offer more co-ordinated care, including a new clinical program to enhance quality of life, along with 16 overnight suites for families and children to stay during treatment.

Families with children who have complex health conditions often face around-the-clock care challenges, and this centre aims to improve quality of life and provide consistent support.

The Centre for Health Complexity is expected to open in 2028 and will provide both in-person and virtual services, such as co-ordinated care, education, training, and emotional and peer support.

Children with complex health needs account for less than one per cent of the pediatric population but more than one-third of pediatric hospital visits.

The project relies on donations and partnerships. EVR’s contribution will help fund advanced technology and family-focused care spaces, giving more children with complex health needs the opportunity to live longer lives.

“Support from corporate partners, like EVR, will ensure this centre has cutting-edge technology, thoughtfully designed spaces and a true family-centered approach. We are so grateful for EVR’s generosity,” said Kris Gibson, associate vice-president of corporate and community giving at B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation.

The new centre is expected to make it easier for families to access consistent, comprehensive, specialized care in one place.
