Dynamiters forward earns top KIJHL honour

Kimberley Dyanmiters’, Tristan Weill, has been named the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s most valuable player of the season.

The star forward was a scoring machine all season putting up 38 goals and adding 33 assists for 71 points in 36 games.

“Statistically, he had a fantastic year,” said head coach Derek Stuart.

“He was a dangerous threat and I know a lot of opponents strictly based their game plan against us to stop him.”

The 19-year-old efforts throughout the season on his two-way play paid off, earning him a 26 plus/minus and winning 58 per cent of his faceoffs.

“He’s a strong kid, who isn’t afraid to battle and get the puck,” said Stuart.

“His speed causes so much trouble for opponents. You put that kind of work ethic, and strength, and skill with that speed, it’s pretty hard to stop.”

And his season could have been even better if not for some injuries.

“He had a little bit of a rough one right after Christmas with some injuries, but I think he battled hard through those injuries and played when he could,” added Stuart.

“It would have been exciting to see him play all the games and see how high he could have gotten points-wise but he’s definitely an elite player in our league.”

Even though the Dynamiters were eliminated from the playoffs in the first round, their year isn’t done yet.

The Nitros will play host for the Mowat Cup, which runs from April 18-21.
