Bucks forward gets set for all-star game in Penticton

The BCHL all-star weekend starts on Jan. 19 in Penticton and Donovan Frias will be representing the Cranbrook Bucks.

“It’s an outdoor game so I’m hoping it warms up a little bit for us, but I don’t think it will be anything too crazy,” he said.

Frias said it’s an honour to be the Bucks’ representative.

“It’s obviously pretty cool to get picked. It means you’re doing something right and it’s a pretty good honour to represent our team out there this weekend.”

Frias has 10 goals and 13 assists so far this season.

His brother Julian is also on the Bucks and they joined the team after playing high school hockey in the United States. Their hometown is Hudson Massachusetts.

Julian says hockey was always big where they were growing up, but it’s cool to see it grow elsewhere in the U.S.A.

“Massachusetts has always been known as a hotbed for hockey there, them and Minnesota are really the two big states when it comes to hockey,” he said.

“I think just in general there’s more teams popping up and more kids playing. We took a trip down to Seattle and they have the brand new NHL team and they have rinks everywhere now and kids playing all the time. It’s good to see the game grow.”

Both brothers are committed to playing hockey at Yale University.
