Evacuation Alert issued for 23 properties, flights taking off again

Twenty-three properties in the Campsall Road area west of Fort Steele have been put on an evacuation alert due to the St Mary River wildfire.

“Evacuation Alerts are intended to give people time to prepare themselves so that they are ready to leave immediately if an Evacuation Order is issued,” explains East Kootenay Regional Emergency Operation Centre Director, Shawn Tomlin.

“Residents within the Alert area with livestock or large animals are encouraged to take steps now to find a place to relocate their animals.”

The fire is approximately 100 hectares and is believed to have been started by some downed power lines.

RDEK officials said ground crews are being supported by helicopters and airtankers though strong winds are causing challenges.

Flights were grounded but have since resumed. There may be some delays as carriers reschedule flights.

Earlier today, ʔaq̓am residents were evacuated by the same blaze.

While Campsall Road residents aren’t required to evacuate at this time, they should have a to-go bag and an evacuation plan.

“In addition, if residents have RV trailers or boats in the Alert area, now is the time to move them. If an Evacuation Order needs to be issued, the priority is getting people out, and RVs and boats will be left behind at that point,” explains Tomlin.
