East Kootenay Addiction Services Society to get helping hand from Purcell Golf fundraiser

Purcell Golf is holding a charity event to raise money for the East Kootenay Addictions Services Society on Monday.

Between 4-6 p.m., the course will be offering cheap golf.

It will be $30 cash for nine holes and a cart with the money going to EKASS.

EKASS executive director Jaime Jenkins said the money will go towards their free counselling.

“We have about 15 counsellors total and they are all the most incredible, caring, compassionate and non-judgemental staff you’re ever going to meet,” she said.

“Mainly we focus on free confidential one-to-one clinical counselling for individuals who are dealing with their own or someone else’s addictions. It doesn’t have to be your own problem, you could be challenged and looking for support for a family member as well.”

She added that events like this are a good way for them to meet new people in the community.

“We’re extremely grateful to be a part of this initiative from Purcell Golf Course. It’s an opportunity for us to get out and see a group of people who may not know we exist but may know someone that needs our services.”

She said it’s always rewarding to see people get the help they need, but EKASS isn’t doing the heavy lifting.

“It’s important to know that they do all the work,” Jenkins added.

“The people who are overcoming addictions are some of the most resilient and strongest people that I’ve ever met and it’s most rewarding for me to see them accomplish their goals at the end.”

EKASS serves the entire East Kootenay, with offices in Golden, Invermere, Kimberley, Creston, Fernie and Cranbrook.
