Columbia Valley RCMP responds to downed paraglider and stranded hiker

Police were called out after a paraglider crashed near Lake Windermere on Sunday.

According to the Columbia Valley RCMP, a paraglider had a malfunction and descended at a high rate of speed.

They collided with the embankment next to the railway tracks. The paraglider was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Police also got a call on Saturday from a hiker lost in the Panorama area.

The hiker was alone and had been hiking for six hours. They were located and brought back safely.

Police and search and rescue are reminding people to be extra prepared before heading out into the backcountry.

“Have a plan, notify people of those plans, and have extra food and water along with extra clothing. Depending on conditions, Search and Rescue might not be able to respond immediately and there have been circumstances in the past where people in need of rescuing have had to spend the night in the backcountry. Also, please be mindful that most areas do NOT have cell reception,” said RCMP officials.
