Galloway Lands proposal passes third reading

The RDEK has given their third reading to a pair of proposed bylaws that would rezone 457 acres of forest near Fernie to make way for a housing development and a conservation area.

Officials with the Regional District of East Kootenay said the proposal seeks to amend the official community plan and zoning designations for multiple properties, collectively known as the Galloway Lands.

“I want to acknowledge and thank everyone who participated in the process, whether it was in conversations with Directors, through written submissions or participation in the two nights of public hearing earlier this month,” said RDEK Board Chair Rob Gay. “It was clear from the thoughtful discussion during Friday’s board meeting that Directors have spent considerable time listening, going through the information and considering all points of view in helping inform their position. And, while there was a range of opinions around the table, it was good to see our board demonstrate such respect for one another in spite of differing views.”

RDEK staff said the vote passed 9-6 in favour of giving Bylaws 3213 and 3214 their third reading.

“The proposal aims to permit increased residential development and the creation of a conservation/recreation parcel on private properties adjacent to Fernie Alpine Resort,” said RDEK officials.

Now, Bylaw 3214 will move forward to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure for approval before the applicant’s Development Agreement can be registered.

“Once confirmation of the registration of the Development Agreement has been received, both Bylaws will come back before the RDEK Board for adoption,” said RDEK officials.
