Interior Health welcomes volunteers to East Kootenay Regional Hospital

Interior Health says its student volunteers play a vital role in supporting patients and health care workers at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital (EKRH).

Ewa Crowther, EKRH coordinator of central functions, expanded the volunteer program based on the number of requests from Mount Baker Secondary School and College of the Rockies students looking to gain healthcare experience.

“Our team of volunteers wear pink t-shirts and pink volunteer lanyards. The colour pink was chosen because it is a warm and uplifting colour that promotes positivity and approachability,” said Crowther.

“It also creates a calming, friendly impression, helping volunteers appear welcoming and approachable to others.”

The additional volunteers are involved in patient care, assisting long-stay patients and those with various medical needs.

“They read books, engage in activities, have conversations, and provide companionship to patients. Volunteers also support patients in the Emergency Department, Ambulatory Care, Oncology, Psychiatry and the Post-Surgical unit,” said Interior Health.

Eight volunteers have taken part since the program began on July 1, 2024, with 10 new volunteers currently being trained.

Interior Health lauds Crowther’s role in developing the program.

“Her leadership ensures the program aligns with the goals of the organization, while also fostering a positive impact on both the hospital community and the volunteers who take part,” said Interior Health.

The health authority says Janice Talarico, director of clinical operations, has played a significant role in the volunteers’ success.

“This program not only allows students to learn about the health care system, but also provides opportunities to explore potential career paths in the medical field or related areas while developing valuable new skills,” said Talarico.
