Cranbrook approves parking reduction for downtown development

Cranbrook city council has approved a development variance permit to reduce parking stalls from one per unit to 0.5 per unit for a development at 32 11th Avenue.

The proposed development would see the complete renovation of the existing vacant building.

The new building would see four commercial spaces along the front with housing units on the back and up top.

It’s expected to be a mix of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units with 14 in total.

Councilor Norma Blissett was concerned over the lack of parking despite the central location in the downtown.

“I just don’t see many people operating without a car in our community,” she said.

“We have some things down town but most people are accessing beyond Cranbrook so they will have a car. We need to be working with the developer on where people are going to park.”

Councilor Lynnette Wray was also concerned but thinks it is a development they don’t want to miss out on.

“We’re in such a tight housing market and I think this will be such a great place to live,” she said.

“I think people will see this as a positive opportunity.”

Despite the concerns, the motion was passed unanimously.
