RDEK brings wildfire prepardness event to Jaffray

The East Kootenay FireSmart Program is gearing up for the second annual Ember Stomp Wildfire Preparedness Event later this month.

The Regional District of East Kootenay says the event will go ahead on Friday, April 25.

“We are inviting all residents to take part in Ember Stomp this year and learn what they can do to help themselves, their neighbours, and their communities be prepared in case of wildfire,” said RDEK Wildfire Resiliency Supervisor, Terry Balan.

“The day is going to be filled with activities, including a live fire demonstration from our Elk Valley and South Country Rural Fire and Rescue Service, and educational presentations.”

The event will happen at the Jaffray Community Hall from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“Bring the kids to check out the wildland firefighting apparatus, play games, meet Ember the FireSmart Fox, and learn more about wildfire preparedness,” said Balan.

Representatives from several organizations will attend, including the East Kootenay FireSmart Program, FireSmart BC, BC Parks, BC Wildfire Service, Living Lakes Canada, BC Ministry of Forests, East Kootenay Invasive Species Council, Western Painted Turtle Recovery Team, Kootenay Landscaping, Fernie Garden Centre, the Kootenay Livestock Association, C.L.E.A.R. Society, GFL, Casey’s Flashing and Roofing, and Fernie Home Hardware Building Centre.

A concession stand will be open for lunch, provided by the Jaffray Community Club and the Sand Creek Lions Club.

“We are grateful to all of our participating partners who are giving so generously of their time and resources to ensure that residents have an opportunity to learn how they can protect themselves and their properties,” adds Balan.

The Ember Stomp will happen ahead of Wildfire Preparedness Day, which is held on the first Saturday in May.
